Tips on broadband routers

Internet Routers Are The Backbone of the Net.

Most people don't realize the critical role a router plays on the Internet. A router is a device which helps to sort and move messages which are built out of information packets to the right destination. In a world which takes the Internet for granted very few people ever wonder how an email, instant message, web page goes from point A to point B. A router uses special tables to lookup where the information needs to be directed. Think of it as a mail sorting machine but instead of zip codes it uses Internet Addresses.

When purchasing a router you need to make sure that it is protected against hackers and intruders. One of the ways these people get access to your network is by overwhelming your router with abnormal packet sizes. It is possible that without the appropriate equipment you will not be aware that your router has been hacked. Sometimes these abnormal packet sizes overflow the buffer without the knowledge of the administrator who will assume that nothing is wrong and that this network traffic is just a random occurrence.

A typical flood attack can be over in seconds but if one script kiddy launches a flood attack using remote machines your network can be brought to its knees. Setting up addresses tables and making sure your router has the latest firmware is essential. To setup your router properly, especially if you have a big office network consider using a network analyzer or hire someone you know that can help setup IP addresses and router tables. By using a network analyzer your can do a packet trace and sniff the network, looking for anything unusual.

If your looking for the first time make sure you do a Comparison between the Network equipment you are considering. Determine if you need a Wireless Routers and possibly also a Firewall which will allow you to build a VPN Virtual Private Network. Gateway Routers should include support for 802.11b, 802.11g or Dual Band wireless. Also, don't forget to add a firewall if you don't have one already and make sure that you use a VPN router with hardware or software support if possible. Of course, try to buy and setup equipment that supports encryption this will allow you to make sure your business remains private.
